Assistant General Counsel at Aldine Independent School District’s Legal Department
Amy Benya joined Aldine Independent School District’s Legal Department in September 2018 and serves as Assistant General Counsel, handling, primarily, business transactional, labor and employment, and Texas Public Information Act matters. Prior to Aldine, Amy worked in the Office of the General Counsel for the Lone Star College System from March 2014 and served as Senior Assistant General Counsel with a six-month appointment as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities and Construction from December 2016 through May 2017. Amy managed all construction projects for the System, including new construction under a $485 million dollar Bond Program. Prior to LSCS, Amy worked in the Office of the General Counsel of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) as Assistant General Counsel with a focus on legislative review and analysis, the Texas Public Information Act, statutory compliance, and employment dispositions. Prior to the TDCJ-OGC, Amy worked in the Office of the Attorney General of Texas; served in private practice as an Associate at a boutique civil law firm; and in a host of clerkship positions with judicial civil district court judges in Travis County, the Appellate Division of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office; and at a large plaintiff’s personal injury firm in the Houston area. Additionally, Amy was one of three intern candidates selected nationally for a coveted summer internship with the largest U.S. retailer, Wal-Mart, Inc., in their Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club General Counsel Offices in Bentonville, Arkansas. Amy received her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University here in Houston, and her Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in Government from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Amy, a Houston native, is a member of the Young at Heart group of the American Heart Association, and the Downtown Group, professional organization.
